Academics
Program Philosophy:
Teens in this population struggle with issues of identity and self
esteem to a greater degree than teens in a typically learning population.
They may have spent years struggling educationally. Or they may have
been academically successful in the various existing day elementary
and middle school programs, and now do not have a Jewish high school
alternative. In either situation, they do not have an opportunity
to spend the critical high school years in an environment that focuses
on building a sense of Jewish responsibility and continuity, where
learning is done in a community environment with a structure based
on Jewish values. Developing a sense of Jewish identity brings these
teens a structure, a positive sense of self. All teens seek to belong
to a group - this school provides them with a group. Consistent integration
into their peer Jewish teen community is critical.
While much of the learning environment includes modification and accommodation
to incorporate their different learning styles, significant attention
is given to learning strategies that allow students to become independent
learners in any environment. Helping these students understand how
they learn is as important as helping them understand what they learn.
Keren Or provides one-on-one teaching and individualized attention
for all students. These students all have the potential to achieve
success and to learn to be successful.
Program Description
Keren Or is a self-contained academic program housed within the Doris
and Alex Weber Jewish Community High School, giving Keren Or students
access to the full range of social and Judaic peer experiences. The
Keren Or program serves students that require a high school curriculum
that is modified to meet their learning differences.
Keren Or is currently involved in the accreditation process through
the Georgia Accrediting Commission.
